Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing

There are a lot of songs about not worrying. When you read the title, you might have thought about the song by Stevie Wonder, or maybe you thought of something else. I remember my father used to sing to me the song, “Don't Worry, Be Happy,” by Bobby McFerrin. This was his way of encouraging me and letting me know that everything was going to be okay.

I think worrying is a common thing for many of us — whether it is a small worry or a big worry. Often, I find myself worrying about the future and what lies ahead. I will lay awake at night thinking about what all I need to do the next day or the next week. But when I think too much on the future, I begin to lose sight of the present. By worrying, I lose my energy, and I become stressed.

“Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow, it empties today of its strength.” — Corrie Ten Boom

Throughout life’s ups and downs, I have learned it is important to focus on living one day at a time. We are not promised tomorrow. Therefore, we cannot live for the future when we are not guaranteed the future. Instead, we must live for today and give our worries to the Lord. Jesus tells us in Matthew 6:34 (NIV), “Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

Rather than worrying about the next day, week, or month ahead, let’s take things day by day, moment by moment, and let God have His way. We must strive to live in the present and remove all worries of tomorrow. God knows our needs and He knows our heart. Take a deep breath, let go of your worries, and trust Him.
